THE electricity wire that allegedly sparked the most devastating of the Black Saturday fires was badly worn and weak, and had been repaired three times previously before it snapped in two distinct places on that day, The Sunday Age can reveal.
Photographic evidence prepared by police investigators shows some strands of the 40-year-old galvanised steel wire that sparked the Kilmore East-Kinglake fire had rusted in places to just 1.8 millimetres in diameter. The company has announced that by 2015 it will develop a turnkey product portfolio that will enable the construction of net zero energy homes using a single supplier.
To achieve that goal, GE plans to add solar PV and residential wind products, along with “demand-response technology” that can allow homeowners to alter usage in real-time, to its existing portfolio of energy-efficient lighting and appliances.
