[26 Sep 2009 | Comments Off on Global warming could lead to “supertyphoons” strike in Japan | 1,358 views]

Washington, September 26 (ANI): Scientists have warned that increasingly powerful “supertyphoons” will strike Japan if global warming continues to affect weather patterns in the western Pacific Ocean.
According to a report in National Geographic News, supercomputer simulations show there will be more typhoons with winds of 179 miles (288 kilometers) per hour—considered an F3 on the five-level Fujita Scale—by 2074.
By definition, supertyphoons carry winds of at least 150 miles (241 kilometers) per hour.

CALGARY — The chief executive of the agency that operates power transmission lines in Alberta is defending a proposal to spend billions of dollars constructing new lines between Calgary and Edmonton.

He says more power transmission lines will help prevent power shortages.
Erikson says if there’s no extra capacity added to the province’s electricity grid, it could lead to some homes periodically going dark.

[24 Sep 2009 | Comments Off on Entergy Texas toughens up coastal power grid | 1,413 views]

Entergy Texas has completed or is about to put into service $100 million in electricity transmission projects, including new lines on the Bolivar Peninsula and in The Woodlands.
The recent improvements include storm-hardened high-voltage transmission towers in coastal communities hit hard by Hurricane Ike, from Beaumont to High Island, Gilchrist, Crystal Beach and Port Bolivar.

[22 Sep 2009 | Comments Off on AEP set to work with landowners on new line | 1,691 views]

Jack Roush’s cows graze under buzzing, crackling, 765-kilovolt power lines, and neither he nor the cows mind the arrangement.
Roush, 72, said the American Electric Power lines were running across the land when he started working at mother and daughter Lou and Ruth Pine’s dairy in 1971. He inherited the land from the Pines in 1991 and now raises 11 cows on 70 acres of grazing land.
